As we were circled around a pretend fire Elinipa
taught us about safety around a fire. These kids are
constantly around a fire because it is there kitchen! They
also have jobs and help their momma around the fire. So it
is very important for them to understand what to do and what not
to do. These are things that are very real to them. This is not quite
the same as the occasional s'more around the camp fire. This is their everyday!
Elinipa also showed us what to do if we or someone else around
us is burned. Sara is showing the rest of the class how to help
the baby because she was burned by the fire. Sara is four and the oldest in
her family. She took the lessons very seriously and is to care for her younger
siblings often. It is unfortunately very likely that she would have to do this for real.
At the top are pictures on the lesson on what to do if they see a snake or have a snake bite. This is very serious for those of us who live in Africa. It is very important for them to know what to do and how to help each other. This is Elinipa giving directions in the role play. Siliwano in his sweet voice was very into his role of helping his older brother who is acting as if he had a snake bite on his ankle. As Elinipa was talking Siliwano jumped up right away pointing and yelling, "nyoka nyoka!!" He is only two but this is a lesson that could save his life as well as his brother's.
