Pre-Primary Teacher Training in Matale

We packed up the car again and headed to Enkeywa before the sun had even hit the horizon.  As we headed passed Mt. Meru we could see the outline of Kili.  She likes to hide behind the clouds ~ a shy mountain she is.

To the left is Amy my apprentice (intern.)  She took the prep and most materials on as her ministry project.  She worked very hard to prepare these material bags to give to the teacher who came to the training.  The centers and activities I wrote depended mostly on the Earth and trash as resources.  There were a few materials needed so Amy prepped them to have in their bags.

Solomon is so kind to translate for us and he is a very good translator!  He copies everything down the mimicking my movements.  He is alway very keen on making sure the people understand within cultural means.
Our first session concentrated on encouragement and the question "why be a teacher?"  It was important for me to hear their stories of why they were teachers and to encourage them in it.  Teachers here are kind of a lowly occupation especially out in the bush.  Little to no training, no resources/curriculum, and rarely paid are teachers in Tanzania.  Helping them to see and be encouraged about how important they are is a huge hurdle.  Hearing their stories is always a joy and moving time. These teachers know it is important to teach but more often than not they have not even been through elementary school.  They have no materials or resources but it is my goal to help them use the world around them as their classroom.

Next we cursed through the morning reviewing "what a teacher is."  This helped us as we try to think outside the box and use what is around us as our resource.  Many of these classrooms have 100s of kids in them who need to be taught and shown the love of Jesus.

The afternoon was the "how to be a teacher."  We began with lessons on the importance of teaching ABCs.  Above we used rocks in games and to display the ABCs in a classroom.

Our first Training Class

Naserian came to visit us while we were out there for the training wearing her outfit that the ladies at PCC made for her!

Prayer Points~
  • Pray for these teachers as they work in the Matale area.  Pray that they begin to implement these ideas into their classroom.  Pray for me as I begin to think about what we can do to help them.  This is a small step in a very BIG project!
