Week 2 of this 16 Week Venture!

I am grateful for the e-mails and facebook messages along the journey.  It is intense and very difficult.  Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.  As difficult as it is I am thankful that this is a well organized program.  I am very impressed and can learn to love it even when I hate it at the same time!  Learning a foreign language everyday all day is intense and extremely tiring.  The teachers are very good and I have waited a very long time for this systematic study of Kiswahili!  Currently it is a love/hate thing!  (smile)  I am told that after the first month it begins to get easier.  I am half way through that so I will keep on pressing on!  By, Thursday of this week I was in tears not sure if I could keep going.  I will try to explain why.  Swahili is a fun language and I enjoy pronouncing!  It is a language developed by sounds and how things are spoken.  Many of the rules of sentence structure make very little sense.  It is very difficult to wrap your brain around.  There 12 noun Classes.  We have currently learned 3 of them.  Each class of nouns have a set of words.  Each set of words have a singular, plural, positive and negative. Are you getting the picture?  A lot of words for one word!  So, this and these have a different word for each class.  Pocessives "my" and "a" A-binder have different pre-fixes for different classes.  I understand the words and their categories but going back and forth to pull the different pieces for sentences is painful to the brain!  I know it takes time and I will get it but it is no picnic here in Makoko!

Some have requested to learn Swahili words along the way!  So, each week I will give you some words you can look at, pronounce, or skip over in the post!  My niece Bella has made my day by sitting at the computer saying my name!  Then, this week she got on Skype and said, "Jambo Ninny!"  She turns two years old this week!  If she can learn a few words I know you can too!

Swahili Words with Wendy:
HuJambo /Jambo - How's the matter (How are you?)  SiJambo (reply) News is good
Habari za Asubuhi - How is your morning?  nzuri - Good
Mungu - God
Asente - Thank You

I have made some friends!  Friday Night to have a break we went down to a place on the Lake.  We ate fish and chips.  The sound of the water and sites of the birds mad for a relaxing break!

Fish & Chips TZ Style!
