Rhodes

The island of Rhodes was our next fun little stop.  From the top of our boat (where the picture on the left was taken) you can see that indeed our ship was taller than most places we visited!  But you can also see the the fortified walls that surround the old city.  The crusaders known as the Knights of St. John fled Jerusalem and settled on the island of Rhodes.  Centuries before however Rhodes was also visited by Paul who was on his way to Jerusalem at the end of his 3rd missionary journey.  There is not a great deal on his time in Rhodes but Acts 21 does make it sound like the time was brief.  In 7th century BC the island began to flourish as a major trading center.  Over the years it has fallen into different hands and has the influences of Italian, Turkish, but after World War II Greece took control of the island from Germany.

We walked through the Old Town surrounded by medieval fortress walls where the ancient alleyways was home to a host of shops and cafes.
