"When Helping Hurts"

No, this title is not referring to the time when you are made to empty the dishwasher because it is your turn for the family chore! "When Helping Hurts" is a book written by Steve Corbitt that combines sound theology, solid research, foundational principles, and proven strategies that prepare you for Christian transformational ministry among the poor, whether in the local community or abroad. I had not heard of the book before Friday Night. My new friend Ashley was passing through Indy and invited me to dinner and a lecture that Corbitt was giving on his book.

Ashley is my new friend who is also a CMF Missionary. We are about the same age and both single on the foreign field. She is a nurse and works in Afghanistan. Yes, you read right my friend is in Afghanistan. I really enjoyed my dinner conversation and it felt as though this was our 150th conversation instead of just our 2nd. We have a lot in common and can relate to who one another feel about serving on the foreign field and the emotions of being back in the States.

Back to the lecture it was good. My favorite points were the distinction between relief, rehabilitation, and development Actually the best part was hearing content and feeling as though it was home. Odd but True! What I mean by that is cultural experiences and content in conversation are not my norm anymore. But, he was aware of the audience of both stateside and internationally and it was easier for me to relate and process. I know this may not make sense to you and that is alright. But, for me Friday Night was very good for my head and heart!
